Overview
ARA-290 (cibinetide) is an 11-amino-acid peptide corresponding to the helix-B surface region of erythropoietin. It engages the innate repair receptor without the erythropoietic activity of the parent protein, which is precisely why it is used as a research tool.
Background
Structural work on erythropoietin showed that its tissue-protective signalling and its red-cell signalling run through different receptor complexes and different faces of the molecule. Isolating the helix-B face produced a peptide that separates the two.
